Winter update

26 Jan 2011

I hope you are all enjoying the Winter 2011 edition of the British Dental Nurses’ Journal. With Christmas and many other events going on, I’m sure the last few months have been busy for many of you.

Chief executive, Pam Swain  and I attended the British Dental Association Awards Dinner in London where we presented Angie McBain  with the BADN Award for Outstanding Contribution to Dental Nursing. Congratulations Angie! I’m sure everyone will agree that you are a worthy recipient of this award, you have been an active and long-time supporter not only for the BADN but in the wealth of knowledge you dispense every day to your dental nurse students in your teaching career.

A huge thank you to Pam and Katie, for all their hard work in organising the 2010 National Dental Nursing Conference. It was great to see everyone having a good time and everybody I spoke to had high praise for the venue, the food and the lectures. I enjoyed shopping at The Body Shop and the Pampered Chef. I also had my car valeted and wow did it sparkle – even my husband noticed! The stands appeared to be busy between each lecture and during the lunch breaks, so I hope delegates found it worthwhile.

I have to say to those of you who could not attend, the dinner was enjoyed by all and you missed a unique opportunity to see council members dressed as elves. We added the proceeds from the Name That Elf competition and raffle (as well as money saved by sending out e-cards this Christmas) to our donation to St Catherine’s Hospice in Leyland in memory of the Association’s founder member, Bunty Lee, who died earlier this year at the age of 90, making a total donation of £750.

The Conference report and pics of the BADN Council dresed as elves is on page 16 and reports on individual presentations will be available on our website www.badn.org.uk soon.

Still on the subject of the conference, this year’s event will be held in Glasgow. The venue and date are still to be confirmed, but it is likely to be November 11 and 12 2011. Programme details will be available in the Journal and on the website from May this year.
I am delighted to welcome Nicola Docherty as President-elect and I’m looking forward to working with her throughout the year until she takes over in Autumn – Congratulations Nicola! Nicola is currently  regional coordinator for Scotland and Northern Ireland. You can read more about her in the magazine.
Finally I would like to wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
