What the BADT can do for you

What the BADT can do for you

01 Feb 2011

It is easy to get caught up in the running of a clinical day and can be a struggle to know the latest news that can affect your remit or duties. To ensure you gain adequate knowledge and your essential CPD, joining relevant associations is an ideal way to do this. Being part of an association enables you to help move your profession forward and aid developments within your chosen area. Associations are there to help and support you, to be one voice and raise concerns, and to ensure you get a community spirit in what can be a challenging, though rewarding, occupation.

About the BADT

The British Association of Dental Therapists (BADT) was founded in 1962. It works for therapists in all areas of the profession, improving working conditions and pay, and fighting for recognition within the profession.

The BADT represents its members with the GDC, the RCS, BDA, Parliamentary committees and many more professional councils and meetings. Striving for good relationships, good practice, good courses and increasing recognition. Currently, it is developing relationships with other dental therapy associations all over the world.

Behind the scenes, the Association aims to work tirelessly to bring in advantageous changes to its members’ working conditions as dental therapists. In 2005, the 2nd Section 60 order meant that the GDC will be able to alter the remit for DCPs without the need for Privy Council agreement. This means the Dental Act no longer needs to be changed in order for dental therapists to extend their duties even further. This was a battle the BADT was delighted to undertake for its members and to help raise therapists’ profile as dental care professionals.

This new column will update therapists on changes, and endeavour to give valid feedback on current battles that are ongoing as the Association strives to build relationships with other professionals and partnerships with dental companies.

So, what are the benefits of being a BADT member?

• You will be part of a professional organisation that promotes the interests of its members.

• You will receive Council representation at meetings of other professional bodies.

• You will have opportunities to meet and network.

• You will receive discounted rates for study days and annual scientific meetings.

• You will be invited to regional meetings which offer verifable CPD, courses, as well as the chance to discuss the profession with other members.

• If you are a full member, you will get a CPD folder.

• You will receive a quarterly journal with verifiable CPD.

• You will have full access to all areas of the website, including the journal and forums. The forum has various threads, which stem from clinical advice to minutes of council meetings and provide a community feeling. When you just want to clarify an issue or ask about a certain course then the forum is invaluable.

BADT Conference

The BADT can confirm that the next national conference will be held in Manchester on Friday June 10 and Saturday June 11. The Conference is always an excellent opportunity to gain valuable CPD, meet with friends and gain motivation that will help you through the year.

At the last conference, the chosen charity for the national conference raffle was Cleft charity. The charity was founded three years ago by Maddie Holmes, whose grandson was born with a cleft lip and palate. It concentrates on funding research and providing training, information and basic equipment for overseas. Cleft works on building the infrastructure to support local teams and fund research. Currently, it is funding research by Great Ormond Street, London, and, St. Andrews, Essex, hospitals with the aim of minimising incisions and scarring of the hard palate and also improving reconstruction of the soft palate. The BADT was proud to be able to donate £900 from the national conference to this magnificent charity.

The next conference will be held at the luxury Hilton Manchester Deansgate Hotel, which offers spectacular views across the city. It boasts a heated indoor swimming pool and  a fully equipped gym and spa. On the 23rd floor there is the famous Cloud 23 cocktail lounge. This conference promises to be interesting and educational during the day with verifiable CPD, and offers relaxation and fun-filled evenings with friends.

International symposium

The BADT council is delighted to announce that in 2014 there will be an international symposium due to be held in London.Associations from all over the world will be brought together to discuss dental therapy and look for ways to develop the profession further.

New regional representative required

Last year, the BADT merged the East and West Midland regions to create a new region for those living in East Anglia. We are now looking for a new regional representative. If you are interested in becoming part of the BADT this is an excellent way to become part of the Association. A regional coordinator will be on hand to guide and aid.
