Dental nursing NVQ to be replaced

31 Jan 2011

City & Guilds has announced that a new qualification, Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing, will be replacing the existing Level 3 NVQ in Dental Nursing (3231-23/83) and the Level 3 Award in Dental Nursing (7393-01).

The  Diploma will combine the NVQ and VRQ into one qualification comprising of 11 units plus a mandatory written exam, which assesses underpinning knowledge. Knowledge units that existed in the 7393 VRQ qualification have now been integrated into some of the competence units within the NVQ qualification.

Centres need only register once to gain a single registrable qualification recognised by the GDC – centres who offered the previous qualifications will have automatic approval to the new qualification.

To achieve the Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing, student dental nurses must successfully complete 11 units and achieve an overall pass in the written exam, which is a synoptic test based on short written answers, multiple choice and scenario-based questions covering the underpinning knowledge.

The last registration date for the previous qualifications was December 31, 2010 and the last certification date will be December 31, 2013.
